Last year, Jhonny Peralta got the blame for everything from the Indians’ poor record to the lagging economy in Northeast Ohio. OK, so maybe the region’s financial situation was out of Peralta’s control. But wouldn’t more fans have filled the seats at Jacobs Field and spent more cash at nearby bars and restaurants if Peralta had performed more adeptly?

Cleveland Indians general manager Mark Shapiro had no difficulty identifying the reasons for the team’s downfall last season: a leaky infield defense and an incendiary bullpen. Fixing those problems is a tougher task.
